Artist DeRoux shares his history of Alaska
DeRoux belongs here, in the state museum's gallery, a venue dedicated to showcasing the state's most highly regarded artists, of which he is certainly one. "And I've been having a blast, a total blast doing it. But I try not to let too many people know I'm having so much fun. DeRoux purposely blurs the line between reality and fantasy, perhaps most notably with this show, his largest and most comprehensive to date. And in terms of the historical focus of his show, the museum - the official repository for the state's history - seems a natural fit. There's something great about these works being shown at a venue dedicated to authenticity and historical accuracy - and of course that's partly the point. The open studios and the Studio Center are an amazing thing to attend and get inspired by, Roy, 24, said on a recent afternoon as he sketched from a book of Albrecht Durers art in the colleges newly renovated Visual Arts Center. He left for Burlington and the University of Vermont, but after a year returned to Lamoille County and the arts-intensive scene in Johnson, where he was due to graduate this weekend with a bachelors degree in fine arts. He knew about Johnsons art resources while growing up in Hyde Park, including the college and the world-renowned Vermont Studio Center, but admits he took them for granted. His mother studied art at Johnson State College with Ken Leslie, the same professor Roy would learn from a generation later.
