Should Big Ten take Paterno's name off its title trophy?
The Big Ten chose to honor two of its greatest coaches by awarding the winner of the conference title football game with the Stagg-Paterno Championship Trophy. It seemed like a good idea at the time. The Big Ten carefully guards its image. Until last week, that is. Now the Big Ten has a huge public relations nightmare on its hands because of what has transpired at Penn State. Paterno was fired Wednesday after allegedly keeping quiet about a former assistant coach who was indicted on sex abuse charges. Amos Alonzo Stagg was a college football pioneer and the longtime coach at the University of Chicago in the early 20th century. Paterno's image is forever tarnished, as people are questioning why he didn't do more to prevent these heinous crimes. Joe Paterno, meanwhile, was the modern-day winner on and off the field. What is the big idea?

For me, the Big Idea for a book often starts with a Little Idea that grows and expands until it becomes part of a larger, broader concept. I’ve run five marathons with my husband in the last five years for Exercise the Right to Read —a literacy and fitness campaign for kids—and each time I cross the finish line I swear it’s my last marathon. The NYC marathon was particularly tough because, being from a small town on the West Coast, I didn’t realize what pre-dawn cold in November in New York actually felt like, or how crowded a field of 40,000 runners would be. Even huddled like... A rope that was obstructing my way at about Mile 12 of the New York City marathon. Let me back up and tell you that marathon running is not something I do for fun. , Author Wendelin Van Draanen found her inspiration on the road, quite literally, as she ran past.
