Jack Dorsey: Twitter's business model based on 'serendipity'

While growth is obvious--after just five years in business, Twitter is now handling 250 billion Tweets every day --the engagement seems less so. Dorsey, who splits his time between Twitter and Square, where he is co-founder and CEO, said that... But when Jack Dorsey, the creator and executive chairman of Twitter, was asked about Twitter's business model, he said it was hardly thought out. --It's not the kind of business model one expects to hear from a startup, especially one now valued by the private markets at $8 billion. "The business model is focused around serendipity," said Dorsey, who spoke with moderator David Kirkpatrick on Sunday at Techonomy 2011. Twitter, for now, is about growth and, according to Dorsey, engagement. Dorsey compared it with the early days of Google AdWords, referring to the text ads that appear alongside search results.

Seeking Alpha unveils a new business model for financial news ...

Jackson said it’s because the pay model allows Seeking Alpha to reach a new set of writers. So the announcement that the site will start paying its contributors looks a bit odd — why start paying for something you were already getting for free. Popular financial news and commentary website Seeking Alpha seems to have a pretty sweet setup — the site has built up a large readership (40 to 45 million pageviews per month) with articles that are written for free. The move seems especially risky since Seeking Alpha’s Premium Partnership Program will pay a rate of $10 per thousand pageviews. (On the other hand, Seeking Alpha founder and CEO David Jackson told me last week that the site charges its advertisers premium rates thanks to its high-quality audience. That means a big chunk of the money the site makes from each article will go to the writer....
