Volunteers clean up ABC houses

“You could do it,” said J. P. Clarke, an ABC scholar at the house, “but you wouldn’t want to. ”. Volunteers cleared vines, branches and brush from the area surrounding the chicken coop and garden. The coop could hold chickens as soon as next week, and will be the responsibility of the students at the house. XL volunteers dedicated the entire day to sprucing up the two houses that 14 scholars — boys and girls — from A Better Chance of Wilton call home. More than a dozen volunteers from XL worked on that house alone. Swapping their office jobs for hammers, saws and rakes, a team of volunteers from the global insurance company XL Group Inc. After a year of storms and heavy tree debris, the backyard of the boys’ house was in sore need of work.

Straighten up and fry right

The Chicken Express chain of restaurants finally came to Wichita Falls a couple of weeks ago, and diners who enjoy the trademark "Chicken E" fare are going to be happy they don't have to drive all the way to Burkburnett anymore. I chose Combo Meal No. 1, which includes four chicken tenders — four excellent tenders as far as taste goes — a generous helping of white cream gravy, one of the softest dinner rolls I've had in a long time and a large drink. The heavily battered chicken comes either on the bone or in large strips of white tenderloins, and the ratio of batter to meat is nicely balanced. The meal comes with a choice of one of 12 side dishes, everything from fried pickle slices and apple pie to corn on the cob, cheese sticks, french fries, fried okra and cole slaw, to name a few. We knew something about the "Chicken E" experience, and we weren't disappointed. Some diners might find the fried crust a little heavy, a little too oily, and a little too crunchy, but my Lunch Buddy...
