Peoria library highlighting local authors

Streight's book, "Bicycle Fever: Peoria Bicycle Races from the 1890s to the 1990s," available for $15 through the Peoria Historical Society, traces a history few know: the prominence of Peoria in the development of the bicycle. The 2012 Local Authors Day at the Peoria Public Library will feature 20 local authors selling and reading from their work. In association with the Proctor Cycling Classic, he wanted a book written about Peoria bicycle races. The book came about in 1990 when Streight was working for Ruppman Marketing Services, whose CEO, Charles Ruppman, was an aficionado of the Proctor Cycling Classic. "In the 1890s, Peoria was one of four major cities in the world for bicycle races," Streight said. Steven Streight is a Web content developer and social media strategist. Here is a look at three of the featured authors. "If you were a hot superstar in bicycle races, you had to prove it in Peoria.

Readers, writers mix at Bookfest

The Blue Ridge Bookfest, now in its fourth year, aims to foster a dialogue between authors and readers in a two-day exchange that includes workshops and author presentations, all free. "The overriding thing we're trying to achieve is to maintain interest in writing, in books and in those who write them," says Bill Ramsey, chairman of this year's Bookfest, which takes place Friday and Saturday at Blue Ridge Community College. "We continue our tradition of noted big-name authors as our honorees," Ramsey says. In the past three Bookfests, celebrated local authors Robert Morgan, Louise Bailey and Ann B. Ross have been honored. Kostova's debut novel, "The Historian," quickly became No. 1 on the New York Times best-seller list when it debuted in 2005. The 2012 Bookfest honoree is best-selling novelist Elizabeth Kostova, who will speak at 6:30 p. m. Friday in the Technology and Education Building at BRCC.

More than 350 events celebrating the online encyclopedia's anniversary are planned across more than 111 countries -- 10 in Germany, 13 in Pakistan and 70 of them in India, where Wikipedia is planning to open an office, Wales said. "The fundamental premise is that everybody brings their crumbs of knowledge to the table and all those crumbs become a banquet," Gardner said. Wales, who has become the face of Wikipedia, will be videoconferencing into many of the parties, hoping to recruit contributors. And at almost a decade old, Wikipedia still has a lot of growing to do, saidpco-founder and promoter Jimmy Wales and Sue Gardner, executive director of the Wikimedia Foundation ,pin a phone conference with reporters Wednesday....
