Graphite Enters Different States of Matter in Ultrafast Experiment

By using different pulse lengths and calculating different spectra, the team was able to extract the time dependence of plasma parameters, such as electron and ion temperatures and ionization states. Using the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) X-ray Free-Electron Laser (XFEL) at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory at Stanford, Stefan Hau-Riege of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and colleagues heated graphite to induce a transition... For the first time, scientists have seen an X-ray-irradiated mineral go to two different states of matter in about 40 femtoseconds (a femtosecond is one quadrillionth of a second). Ultrafast phase transitions from solid to liquid and plasma states are important in the development of new material-synthesis techniques, in ultrafast imaging, and high-energy density science.

United States Ranks Last on Breast-Feeding Support

But the science that’s trumpeted by the Surgeon General, A. A. P. and the C. D. C. suggests that breast-feeding, when possible, has benefits that aren’t matched by those alternatives — in its “ Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding ,” the... Save the Children makes the point that women in developing countries don’t need to breast-feed in the way that women in impoverished countries do. We have ready access to nutritious alternatives and clean water. But if that’s the case, then why not support policies that make breast-feeding as easy as possible.

Superconducting, nonsuperconducting states of cuprates 'not that ...

“We have shown that the nonsuperconducting state and the superconducting one are not that different in these materials, in that it takes only a millionth of a millionth of a second to make the electrons ’synch up’ and superconduct,” says Cavalleri.  The material was at a  base temperature under 20 K superconductor, and displayed superconductivity for a fraction of a second before returning to its normal state. “We have used light to turn a normal insulator into a superconductor,” says Andrea Cavalleri , in a news release from Oxford University. The group says it used a femtosecond pulses of a mid-infrared laser to transform nonsuperconducting (above 5 K) La ) — a strip-ordered compound — into a transient superconductor. Reports that an international team of researchers have been able to turn a nonsuperconducting form of copper oxide into a superconductor using a strong laser burst....
