Council says 'no' to sale of EED
Without the approval of these items, the negotiations toward the possible sale cannot continue because the value of the utility cannot be determined and, therefore, a potential sale price cannot be brought to the city for consideration. Finance Director Jerome Kitchens explained that if the sale of the EED were to happen, then there would be certain financial liabilities that would be deducted from the sale cost. Council was asked to approve two items that would have helped to determine the city’s liability in the sale of the utility. The next step for council will be a workshop to determine if the EED should be put back under the control of an independent board instead of being governed by council as it is now. He said the pension liability would exist whether they went through with the sale or not and it was a number that the city needed to have in its books anyway.
