What is the debate over purchasing health care across state lines?
Currently the healthcare reform act does not allow purchasing insurance from out of state carriers (or across state lines). Why are the republicans for this and the dems against is it overall? It seems like it would be a good thing? What are the arguments
The current health care reform act does not allow it because the individual laws and rules are made on the state level.
Out of state carriers would not be accountable to consumer protection from the state they are selling to.
Purchasing insurance across state lines supported by primary candidates
Ahead of the May 15 primary, the Idaho Freedom Foundation asked candidates if they would support opening up Idaho’s borders and allowing insurance companies from out of state to sell in the Gem State. Julie Ellsworth, R-Boise, introduced House Bill 587, which would have allowed insurance companies from other states to offer their services in Idaho. The discussion was on a proposal to open up the Idaho market to insurance providers from out of state. There was a lot of testimony in favor of the bill, especially from business owners, saying there are companies in other states that offer better plans for their employees. The bill garnered bipartisan support as it passed the House on a 59-6 vote. Rising costs in the health insurance industry moved to the forefront before one committee in the Idaho Legislature during the 2012 session. State regulators approved plans Thursday for a $202 million power line that will run for dozens of miles through western Wisconsin's bluff and river country, despite concerns the line is unnecessary, too costly and would mar the pristine scenery. Northern States Power Company, Dairyland Power Cooperative and WPPI Energy have been working to win the Public Service Commission's approval for the joint project since 2008. The plans the PSC approved call for the Wisconsin line to connect to another segment out of Rochester, Minn. The three-person Public Service Commission unanimously approved the line during a meeting Thursday morning in Madison. They maintain the line will help meet rising demand for power in western Wisconsin. The line would run south along the Mississippi, cut east to Galesville and then turn south again before ending at a new substation just west of Holmen.
