Does spray painting a batting helmet defect the warranty or protection it provides?

I am thinking about painting my high school baseball teams batting helmets. Is there any legalities involved, such as ruining the warranty or any other legal issues incase of an injury?

Since we live in a sue-happy world and most warranties are written by lawyers, I would think that ANY modification to the helmet would void the warranty. I'd read the tag and see.
